Promicin is the main element fought over in the series, and is one of the most saught after, or despised, resources on Earth.

[edit] Specifications
Promicin is a neurotransmitter - a chemical produced in the brain that relays, amplifies and modulates signals between neurons and other cells. It is set apart from the normal four that control and regulate the human body, providing access to an unknown area of the cerebellum and giving the person access to extra-human abilities.
The effects of promicin can be suppressed by the promicin-inhibitor, though the person suffers severe side-effects as a result of exposure.
[edit] History
Promicin was originally discovered by Max Hudson, when he examined Orson Bailey, a member of the 4400, an enigmatic collection of humans stolen from different time periods, taken to the future, altered, and returned, with promicin in their systems to give them abilities to change the timeline.
Doctor Kevin Burkhoff, a world-renknowned scientist and specialist on dormant neural pathways, began his own investigations into promicin and the possibility in mass-marketing 4400 abilities, and after a long and painful struggle developed a procedure to artificially give normal human beings 4400-like abilities, through a series of promicin injections that, with time, teaches the body to naturally produce promicin. Burkhoff used himself as a test subject, and, even though his body suffered greatly, developed regenerative abilities.
Dennis Ryland, a paranoid, yet powerful and dangerous enemy of the 4400 and opposed to their purpose on Earth, teamed up with Isabelle Tyler; a future-created human who was the most powerful person on Earth thanks to promicin giving her near-God like abilities. They began creating their own stockpile of promicin for usage by the military and government, which eventually led to the creation of the Enhanced Soldiers. The stockpile numbered, at its height, 17432 units (vials). It was discovered in research done by Haspel Corporation's scientist that only 50% of people can accept promicin, as the other 50% develop a fatal brain aneurysm after rejecting promicin, and die. However, a simple injection of pure promicin is a far more safer and easier method of introducing promicin into the human body than Burkhoff's original method.
Jordan Collier, the Nova Group and some other followers stole Haspelcorp's supply of promicin, and distributed it to the world in an effort to stop The Catastrophe, and then set about creating new supplies of promicin from new "Promicin Positives" (humans who gained promicin from injections) and forming the Promicin Movement to organize P-Positives to help better the world. This effort was a success, though thousands upon thousands of people died from rejecting promicin, and the world's governments banned promicin, ordering everyone found to be Promicin Positive was to be arrested and sent to prison for life without trial.
Burkhoff nearly developed a promicin compatability test, as upon reading reports of people surviving the shot, realized that nine out of ten left-handed people survived taking promicin. In the brain there is a small part called the corpus callosum, it's essentially a bundle of wires that connects the two hemispheres and it's usually slighly larger in lefties than it is in righties. That's why left-handed people survive; the size of that part of the brain helps determine whether or not a person will be able to integrate a new neurotransmitter and the size also affects the amount of time it will take to get an ability. With further research, Dr. Burkhoff developed a simple CAT-scan that will tell how anyone's body will react to a promicin shot.
